Technology and Computers
Technology is beginning to assail the underlying concepts of our educational system - a system that's huge and rich and so far fairly immune to economic influence. But the support structure for those hallowed and not so hallowed halls has always been parents willing to pay tuition and alumni willing to give money, both of which are likely to change over a generation for reasons I've just spent 1469 words explaining. Technology is broken for the 285 million people in the US who are not in the business. You know this if you support technology at work, because you also support tehcnology at home for yourself, your friends, your family, and for anyone else who can guilt you into fixing the messes they have made. Technology is social only insofar as it is used "for" something, leaving the structure of technology "in itself" as a non-social residue. That residue can either be approached technically, for example, by engineers concerned only with the inner workings of a device, or philosophically in terms of the essential nature of technology as such.
Technology is our slave, and we can make it do what we want. With technology there are no good reasons, only excuses.
Computers are made with a variety of elements, like plastics, glass, steel, gold, lead, mercury, cadmium and fire retardants that can be recaptured through recycling and used again. If thrown away, these computers can release toxins to the environment, potentially polluting the groundwater we drink and the air that we breathe. There are only a few plastic recyclers in the country capable of recycling the special plastics used in computers. Computers are inherently interactive: If you don't do anything, they don't do anything.
Computers are our friends, aren't they? Life is simpler with them, isn't it? Computers are available for public use at any of the Community Access Program (CAP) sites across Canada and are located in various public facilities, including libraries, seniors' centres, schools and recreation centres. The volunteers who donate their time at the CAP sites provide training, access to the internet and information on distance education. Computers are a multimedia tool. With integrated graphic, print, audio, and video capabilities, computers can effectively link various technologies.
Computers are not the only factor in this hollowing out, but they play an important role. Computers are not a good choice for the developmental skills these children are learning to master: crawling, walking, talking, and making friends. Computers are the tools of learning today. Yes, kids _will_ learn with the aid of computers, _useless_ knowledge that'll help them in their further education and careers.
Computers are better able to oversee their use by individual pupils than is a teacher. Software writers could build monitoring into lessons. They are now more portable than ever, partly due to things like laptop computers and wireless technology. Computers have made our lives easier, and we have all become so reliant on them and their assistance that many of us could not imagine life without them.
