Despite the love many couples feel for each other, if the relationship is childless then it might feel empty and need resolving. Often the first port of call for a couple that wants to adopt a child is to a private, possibly charitable organization that helps home orphans with people that desperately want to adopt. Adoption is a lengthy, expensive and sometimes painful process that is often sought by couples that have all but given up trying to conceive, but it may not necessarily be the answer for them. There are occasions where a child is placed into a foster home because the parent or parents cannot cope, financially or emotionally and sometimes it is where, as in certain communities and countries, the mother is a single person. Adoption has many different aspects that need to be overcome. It is only when every piece of paperwork has been completed that the adoption can finally proceed. An adopted child in America for instance will have their birth name changed to the adopted parent(s) and entered onto an amended birth certificate with details of their birth mother and father erased. Children that are adopted at an older age will probably understand what has happed earlier than a young child who may have to wait until they are in their teen years before the adoption process can be explained and understood completely.

Not everyone who adopts is childless though and there are those who may be married or single and already have children or may be childless at the time of the adoption. It is good to know that there are more opportunities to adopt a child now than there have ever been before despite the difficulties often found in trying to do so.
